Cigars Partagás Lusitanias Gran Reserva Cosecha 2007 review, 2015
Tonight, the night of the 31st December/1 January 2015, I am smoking a special vitola. This cigar is Partagás Lusitanias Gran Reserva Cosecha, Cuba. The factory name (vitola de galera) of this stunning cigar is Prominentes.
I have tasted this vitola earlier in the conditions correct for a correct tasting: no alcohol, no food, clear taste buds, plenty of time and a lot of attention. So this magic New Year’s Night (the biggest night and wonderful, most awaited-for celebration for all Russian and former Soviet people) is the night when I’m enjoying this cigar, with the full knowledge that it will not let me down and will give me a great time.
About this rare cigar
Partagás Lusitanias are one of the most loved cigars for connoisseurs, and a significant vitola of the Partagás marka. So this special edition – Partagás Lusitania Gran Reserva Cosecha 2007 – is an “upgraded”, special Lusitania. The selection of the leaves of the harvest 2007 (cosecha 2007) and the blend-making were completed by the legendary ligador (master-blender) of the Partagas Factory – Arnaldo Bichot.
The tobaccos for the series “Grand Reserva” have to go through a minimum of 5-years of thorough ageing. The tobaccos are coming from the best plantations Vegas Finas de Prima that are situated in the province Pinar del Rio, Cuba.

Visual & Wrapper
The cigar is beautiful, big and grandiose. It is dressed in classic Cuban darkish-brown colorado. The capa is very evenly looking, slightly oily, attractive…
Cold nose
Dried wild mushrooms, dried manure, wildflower honey.
In smoking
It has a sweet and smokey start. The tones of honey, dry soil, dry forest herbs. The draw of my cigar was slightly light at the beginning but it became optimal in a few millimeters. The tones of pleasant mustiness of herbs and fir-needles are tingling your nose if you smoke via retro-nasal way, like I do. I always smoke retro-nasal way because I like to grasp the maximum of the flavours of the smoke. But I should warn you that sometimes the organoleptic sensations of some cigars may be too powerful and the smoke – too intense for smoking it only retro-nasal way. And that may cause dizziness, so you should be careful. So am I at this moment, because I can already sense that this cigar is a pretty powerful taste bomb, and I should operate with it skillfully and with careful respect.
My cigar keeps giving me the tasteful tones of dried soil, kid leather, soil dust, dried wildflowers, honey… It is pleasant and tasty smoking, producing a lot of great cold smoke.
The 2nd part of the Gran Reserva Cosecha
tastes more “grounded” than the first one. The tones of soil get more powerful, the kid leather turns into an expensive furniture leather. The sweetness remains the same high. A lot of powerful smoke!
The strength (fortaleza) is high, but it is a natural and “healthy” strength of a genuine, great cigar made from only natural tobacco, in Cuba. (Cuban tobaccos, generally, contain less nicotine).
The 3rd part
is really rich in taste. You will notice this if you still keep attention to the tones of this large long cigar. It brings more sub-shades and subtones to the spectrum of the previously set strong flavours. The 3rd part is, actually, remarkable. It stays enjoyable till the end, which is a rare thing. There is no compromise about the last third at all: the cigar has neither the usual for many cigars unbearable heaviness nor bitterness.
Summary
Wonderful Lusitania for a wonderful celebratory Night!
Cigars Partagás Gran Reserva Cosecha are powerful cigars. They generously give you a lot of cold, rich, dense, substantial, delicious smoke. They are perfect cigars for a very special night or special event. This large, boasting a perfect construction cigar will make you a stunning and substantial company.
Another reason why these cigars will be suitable for a long good evening, or celebration, is because you can pair them very well with 3 various drinks, accordingly to every third of your cigar. I will end my review with the pairing recommendations for each part of Partagás Lusitanias Gran Reserva Cosecha.
Rating: 99
Pairing cigars Partagás Lusitanias Gran Reserva Cosecha 2007 with drinks
The 1st part will go very well with fine, not too sour Champagne – preferably vintage.
*I recommend, when you smoke a cigar, especially a very good cigar, with wine or champagne, to always make little intervals between the sip of wine/champagne and the smoke. This way the acidity of Champagne will not oppress the taste of your cigar. Cigars do not like acidity. Here is my article about pairing cigars with wine (in Russian).
The 2nd part you can enjoy with rum, Cognac, armagnac, whisky. The power and richness of this part of the cigar and the power of a strong spirit drink will make a great, mutually enriching marriage!
The accompaniment for the 3rd part, when there appears a tiny amount of bitterness (which is normal for this part) should be rather sweet, rounded and warm: sherry (jerez), or aged port, or your favorite liquor. These drinks will butter the slightly bitter and slightly heavier end of the cigar.
